The United States Basketball Academy (USBA) is recognized internationally as the leader in providing innovative training and education to assist basketball players and coaches in reaching their fullest potential. The Academy was founded in 1993 by Bruce O'Neil, former University of Hawaii Head Basketball Coach and former President and founder of Westcom Productions, Inc., a video production company that produced more than 100 sports training videos for the ESPN Home Video Library.
O'Neil and the late basketball legend Wilt Chamberlain shared a vision to create an Academy where athletes and coaches could concentrate solely on basketball without 'big city' distractions. With a team of investors, O'Neil built the United States Basketball Academy on 47 acres of prime recreational property nestled in the mountains along the McKenzie River, just 46 miles east of Eugene-Springfield, Oregon.
The organization delivers on its mission to provide basketball knowledge to the world through its educational programs and training camps held at the Academy as well as at facilities in Asia and Europe.
Over the years, hundreds of professional, college and high school coaches from around the world have come to rely on the USBA and its distinguished faculty for basketball education not only for themselves, but also for their players.

Chinese Basketball Association Draft 2006

HENAN JIGANG PICKS TYRONE WASHINGTON #1 IN CHINESE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION DRAFT
Eugene, Ore. (August 3, 2006) --- Henan Jigang used the first pick in the Chinese Basketball Association's (CBA) international player draft to select former Mississippi State star Tyrone Washington, a 6-10 center, during the league's third annual draft held today at the United States Basketball Academy's training facility near Eugene, Ore.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be selected in the CBA draft," said Washington, who was drafted in the second round by Houston in the 1999 NBA player draft. "I am looking forward to playing in China again this season."
Washington played in the CBA last season. He averaged 27 points and 12 rebounds per game for Fujian. He was the first of 56 elite international basketball players drafted or were re-signed to play in the CBA during the 2006-'07 season. General managers and coaches from 14 CBA teams evaluated and selected players during the tryout camp July 28 through Aug. 2 at the USBA.
"Our teams have selected strong players whose skills will complement their new teammates in the CBA," said Wang Du, vice president of the CBA League Committee. "Through our strong partnership with the USBA, our teams have had an excellent opportunity to evaluate many elite players at one time and location."
Teams picked players in reverse order of how they finished in the CBA standings last season. The team with the best record drafted last while the team with the fewest wins picked first.
Through daily games and workouts players showcased their talent and teamwork to the coaches and general managers of the 14 CBA teams. On Aug. 3, all players and team officials gathered in the USBA Great Hall for the four-round player draft.
"This has been another excellent CBA tryout camp and draft," said Bruce O'Neil, president and CEO of the USBA. "The USBA is pleased to continue to partner with the CBA to grow basketball's popularity in China as well as match these outstanding teams with terrific basketball talent who want to play in China."
Players drafted in the first two rounds negotiate and sign contracts on draft day and then are placed immediately on the team's active roster, while the other two players will be on the team's reserve list, ready for call-up in case of injury to one of the other foreign players. CBA teams are allowed two active foreign players each on their 12 man rosters. If chosen on draft day, players are required to commit to their new team and sign a contract before they leave the USBA or they will not play in the CBA next season.
Eighty elite players were invited to the 2006 tryout camp and draft. Players were divided into teams coached by NBA and NCAA coaches. The camp was directed by Ted Owens, former University of Kansas coach; Ernie Woods, former coach at Bellevue Community College; Rob Evans, former coach at Arizona State University; J.D. Barnett, former coach at several Division 1 programs; and Pete Gillen, former coach at the University of Virginia. All are members of the USBA's Coaches Advisory Board. The players at this year's camp were from the United States, Canada, Africa, Puerto Rico, South America and Europe.
Since 2003, the CBA has contracted with the USBA to create the player draft and replacement player personnel system. As in the past, members of the CBA management team attended this year's session and worked with USBA staff to administer all aspects of the player draft and player personnel system. The draft is one of several initiatives the USBA and the CBA are creating to improve the quality of basketball for the 300 million basketball players and fans in China.

United States Basketball Academy Spotlight

Through the leadership of Bruce O'Neil, the Academy has developed and cultivated strong relationships with international basketball governing bodies and government officials, particularly in Asia and Europe.
Today, the USBA is proud to boast its partnership with the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC). Together we educate and train ABC coaches and players from member countries. The Confederation not only relies on the USBA for player and coach development, but also helps the league identify and recruit top North American players and coaches to join its own professional teams.
In addition, the USBA enjoys and excellent relationship with the Chinese government and has an exclusive agreement to help develop the game at all age and skill levels through the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Through intensive training sessions held at the USBA and at facilities in China, O'Neil and his coaches have assisted Chinese coaches in developing international stars, inlcuding Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets, Wang Zhi Zhi of the Los Angeles Clippers and Mengke Bateer of the San Antonio Spurs.
O'Neil's extensive background and knowledge of sports in Asia is not only attracting more teams, players and coaches to the USBA ... the National Football League is working with him to help introduce American football (or as the Chinese say, 'American OliveBall') to the Chinese people.
From remote villages in China to the National Basketball Association, the USBA is committed to providing basketball knowledge to the world.

What is the United States Basketball Academy

The USBA began its primary operations at the current facility in 1997. The original working name was the National Basketball Academy until Bruce O'Neil and the late Wilt Chamberlin had a discussion sitting on a tree stump on the current property. They decided to replace National with United States and the USBA was born. The organization was primarily formed to build a basketball camp on 46 acres of prime recreation property along the McKenzie River, which is 47 miles east of Eugene-Springfield, Oregon. The facililities at the camp include:
Accommodations for up to 250 people (Two, 6 bedroom, 6 bath executive lodges, each with a large meeting room and kitchen, Five, 3 bedroom, 2 bath coaches lodges, each with a living room and kitchen, and Five deluxe dormitories, each housing 34 persons).
One 15,000 square foot gymnasium with 2 NBA hardwood courts.
Four full-size outdoor courts with NBA glass backboards and a coated playing surface.
A 9,000 square foot meeting, dining and resource center. The state of the art kitchen provides meals for up to 300 persons per seating.
A fitness center and conference room.
A swimming pool, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and a fishing pond.
A challenge course complete with high and low ropes courses.
Over the years, the USBA has built the reputation as a premier summer basketball camp serving primarily Oregon and the surrounding states. The USBA has also become known as a year round basketball training facility for both coaches and teams from around the world. The organization's reputation of excellence is based on years of developing innovative teaching concepts and teaching aids that have become the benchmark for basketball educational programs. All of these tools are incorporated in teaching stations throughout the camp.
Something very unique about the USBA is its growing status around the world, especially in Asia, as a premier provider of basketball education and services. By utilizing Bruce O'Neil's existing relationships with the world's top governing basketball bodies, as well as the strong base of internationally known advisors and faculty members in conjunction with the above mentioned teaching concepts, the USBA has built a platform to launch into many basketball related areas that could drive significant growth for the company.
In addition, the Academy site is being marketed to church and business retreat groups as the McKenzie River Conference Center and is quickly becoming a very well known retreat destination in the Pacific Northwest.
