Eugene, Ore. (August 7, 2007) --- The Chinese Basketball association and the United States Basketball Academy will host the Chinese Basketball Association's fourth annual Draft Camp and four-round player draft in Honolulu from August 13-16, 2007. For the past three years the draft has been held at the United States Basketball Academy's facility in Eugene, Oregon. The players' tryouts leading up to the draft will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii. The Draft, on August 16th, at the Hawaii Convention Center, will select top import players to play in the fifteen team league. Two imports are allowed on each team.
The tryout camp and draft is for invited American and foreign players who want to play for teams in the highly competitive CBA during the 2007-2008 season. All import players are required to participate in this tryout camp and draft.
"USBA is pleased to continue its partnership with the CBA to match great import players with the league's outstanding roster of teams," said Bruce O'Neil, the USBA's founder and CEO.
"The tryout camp and draft is one example of the many initiatives we have with the CBA to improve coaching and player development at all levels of basketball throughout China."
Former head coach of the University of San Francisco, Bob Gaillard, and internationally respected coach Ernie Woods co-direct the camp and draft.
The 60 invited players will be divided into six teams that will be coached by former NCAA and NBA coaches. Head coaches and general managers from all 15 CBA teams will evaluate players during the daily workouts and games.
At the end of the week, teams will select and sign to contracts two players during a four round draft held at the Hawaii Convention Center at 4 PM on August 16th. Because each team is allowed only two import players on its roster at a time, the other two drafted players act as reserves to be called to the team pending injuries.
The USBA is a primary consultant to the CBA. The USBA has developed many grassroots basketball education programs for coaches and players at all levels of basketball of competition throughout China, including hosting numerous coach and player clinics, and arranging for the USBA All Star, college and professional teams to play games and tournaments throughout the country.
In addition, China's national teams and professional teams annually train at USBA's facility in Oregon. For the past two years, 40 of China's top junior players have studied and trained at the USBA Institute during the five-month winter program in Oregon. The 12-17 year old players are the top young talent from China. Las year, 10 players were 6'10" and above.
